Post Operative Instruction After Bleaching
After undergoing a dental bleaching procedure, it’s important to follow the post-operative instructions to ensure the best results and minimize any potential discomfort.
- Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks: For the first 48 hours after the bleaching procedure, try to avoid consuming foods and drinks that could stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark-coloured fruits, and sauces.
- No Smoking: If you smoke, refrain from doing so for at least 48 hours after the procedure, as smoking can contribute to staining and hinder the whitening process.
- Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue with your regular oral hygiene routine, but be gentle while brushing your teeth for the first couple of days. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid irritation.
- Avoid Highly Pigmented Products: Avoid using coloured mouthwashes, coloured toothpaste, and other highly pigmented dental products that might interfere with the whitening process.
- Sensitivity Management: It’s common to experience increased tooth sensitivity after a bleaching
procedure. If this happens, your dentist might recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste or gel to alleviate discomfort. You can also try avoiding very hot or cold foods and drinks during this time. - Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, as it helps maintain oral health and prevents dry mouth, which can contribute to tooth sensitivity.
- Avoid Over-Whitening: if you’re using an at-home whitening kit, follow the instructions carefully and avoid overusing the product, as excessive whitening can lead to tooth sensitivity and enamel damage.
- Regular Dental Check-ups: Maintain your regular dental check-up schedule.
- Long-Term Care: To maintain your newly whitened smile, practice good oral hygiene, avoid excessive consumption of staining foods and drinks, and consider touch-up treatments as recommended.
